Default Software or databases?

Just curious.

Has anyone created a database or software application for tracking their seed collection?

I keep meaning to put together something to make managing my collection easier. Essentially all of the information that is offered in the yearbook as well as things such as when I last grew out the variety, etc..

Anyone, anything?

Welcome to SSE

I have used MS Excel to do the following:
1. Keeping track of seeds
2. Categorize seed types
3. All other characteristic (germination time, maturity time, color of fruits, hieghts, etc.)
4. Using the same template, I can print out plant labels for seedlings.
5. Insert pictures of the plants.

The sorting capability of Excel makes it ideal to keep track of things without having to learn to use a complicated database software.

Default Thanks

I agree that it is easier, but having done that for the past few years and I am starting to find it lacking.

I was just hoping someone had done something like this before I created it on my own.

I need something like this as well. My notebooks are going to get really, really messy and disorganized!

Here is a piece of software, not cheap $75 with trial not sure about spyware etc that it might load

I've authored a Visual Basic program and am sending it out for free right now. Below are some pix's of the main screens. If you want a copy (again, it's free) send me an email to the account I've set up to do this distribution. I check the account at least twice a day. No strings. No advertisements. No spyware. Truly free. Only enjoy.

A readme file is included with a description of the operation of the software. So far, it works well on Windows 98, Windows ME, XP, and Vista. And one person has it installed on Windows 7. That person said they chose "Ignore" on a couple of install errors, and the program fired up and ran perfectly. It doesn't like the bug-filled Microsoft Windows Defender. You need to turn that off to do the installatation. The reason is that Microsoft doesn't recognize me as an author or source of software.

There are actually 3 programs.

1. SeedTrades tracks names, addresses and what is being traded (what sent and what received).

2. Seedbox tracks any and all seeds by Variety name. It can print out Planting lists, Trade lists, or a single variety record. It also stores one picture of that particular variety. While mainly aimed at tomatoes, it can accommodate any seeds by putting a prefix on the variety name (i.e. Pep - Jimmy Nardello) I have more than 500 varieties of seeds in my personal database, so those with large collections should do well with this program.

3. SeedsNTrades is a single program that is a combination of the two above, with the same operation and the same databases

If later you choose to remove these programs, they come with an "uninstall" that works quickly thru the normal "Remove a Program". Also, if for any reason the installation totally fails, it will remove any parts of itself it has installed up to the failure point.

For those of you who also visit or are members of Tomatoville, there is a post in the General Discussion forum where you can further review or even install the program of your choice. Non-members there have not been able to install from that post, so I am offering to send out email replies with the file of your choice attached.

Thanks ContainerTed! I went and registered at Tomatoville, hopefully I will be able to find the post, that looks like a WONDERFUL! program.

I just found this site, haven't registered, but it might be useful

http://myfolia.com/

"Folia is a social garden tracking site. Keep tabs on when you planted and when your plants are ready for harvest, keep a journal of events in your garden, create to-do lists, organise seed swaps & discover others growing the same things as you!"

The post is in the General Discussion forum under a thread title of "More Free Software".

I usually don't find other folks software to my liking. Once you write your first program that you can use for yourself, everything else is "something less than I need". I've found garden journals to be cumbersome when planning for next year.

If you need one of mine, simply email me with the request for the one you want. I'll attach it to the reply.

Take care

Ted

And now there is a fourth program. You can find my PepperBox program in the thread mentioned above as well as the others. Also, I have worked out an arrangement with the IDigMyGarden forum and you will find the same four programs available in their "Trading Bazarre" forum. Enjoy. There will be a couple more to come in the near future.
