Default Garlic Phytoplasma Alert

The phytoplasma alert on seed saver's garlic page says that the forum would have more information but I didn't see anything here yet. Does anyone have any information on this issue?

I'd be interested to know what signs other than leaf yellowing are an indication because I've seen aster leafhoppers around my property this year. Also, other than decreased vigor, is there anything else to be worried about like edibility?

Thank you.

Hi BuffaloGardener,
Thanks for your post! The alert posted on the garlic page is the info that we have available. Badly infected cloves will be soft (I wouldn't eat those), but otherwise the garlic is still be edible. Thanks for re-posting the link... this will certainly be helpful for others as well!
Good luck!

SSE moderator and members,

Many people lost their garlic and have no clue what happened or why it happened due to the scarcity of information. I have a thread going regarding garlic and Aster yellows on another online gardening site. I seek approval of a SSE moderator to post the link in this forum.

I am simply trying to get word out, get a discussion going, and gather information in order to help growers (like me) who may have been affected by Aster yellows. This is an extremely important issue and I feel strongly that any competitive or possessive attitudes between gardening sites should be set aside in the interest of all gardeners and especially garlic growers.

A moderator may contact me privately to access the link prior to approval if so desired.

I do feel bad for you all who have lost their garlic.

I wonder if Aster yellow was isolated mainly to Minnesota, Wisconsin and northern Iowa?

I am asking because I live a couple hours south from SSE and I did not see any issues this year, other than some of my garlic being a little bit smaller than last year because it was a quite dry growing season. Or did I just luck out?
