Question Champion of England Peas

Last year I ordered and grew Champiion of England peas in a 12' tepee support thinking the neighbor kids would like to enter the tepee and pick from inside. Unfortuantely they showed no interest. And it was difficult to pick myself. BUT THE PEAS WERE OUTSTANDING AND SWEET!!!

This year I put in a 25' row with the 12' supports. Does anyone grow these in a different way of supporting them?

Also I noticed that one pea vine has burgundy flowers!? Is this unusual and what should I expect. I bought fresh seeds this year so not linked to saving the seed.

Looking forward to some input and answers. Thanks, Bob

Hi Bob. I know nothing about those peas but welcome to the forum.

I suspect that a lot of the regulars on the forum are out in their gardens too much to be online very much.

Hope your garden isn't too wet and is growing well.

Colored flowers are a dominant genetic trait in peas. It's probable that particular plant was an accidental cross with another variety. It's *conceivable* that it's a genetic mutation, but it's not nearly as likely.

You might want to save its seed separately and grow it out - its offspring may not have all of the 'pure' varietal traits, but it might be interesting, and possibly worth incorporating into the gene pool of your planting stock -- assuming you're not concerned with maintaining a completely pure line.
